제3회 갤러리 한옥 불화·민화 공모전 입상을 계기로 오혜재 작가의 개인 전시회가 24년 1월 9일부터 18일까지 갤러리 한옥에서 개최한다.
독학으로 예술의 길을 개척한 오 작가는 자신의 예술 여정 10주년을 맞아 전통과 참신함을 접목한 작품들로 불교와 민화의 세계를 재해석, 미술계에서 독특한 자리매김을 하고 있다.
오혜재 작가는 "숫자 10은 완전함의 상징이며, 불교에서는 '온 세계'를 의미하는 시방세계(十方世界)를 상징한다"고 말한다.
그녀의 작품 세계는 시공간을 초월한 부처님의 가르침과 어우러져 관람객에게 깊은 사유의 기회를 제공한다.
그녀의 저서로는 '저는 독학 예술가입니다'와 '독학 예술가의 관점 있는 서가: 아웃사이더 아트를 읽다'이며, 책을 통해 예술 비평과 칼럼, 예술을 통한 다양한 문화 간의 이해와 소통을 시도하고 있다.
2014년부터 일러스트레이션 작업을 시작한 오 작가는 정규 미술교육을 받지 않고 자신만의 예술 세계를 구축해 왔다.
국내외 다양한 예술 활동에 참여하며 명성을 쌓아온 그녀는 2020년 싱가포르 아시아예술협회(AAA) 주최 '코로나19 국제 자선 그림 공모전'에서 금상을, 2021년 이탈리아 현대작가센터(COCA) 주최 '제3회 COCA 국제 공모전'에 1차 선정되는 등 국제무대에서 인정받았다.
이번 전시회는 오 작가의 지난 10년간 걸어온 예술의 결실을 보여주는 자리이며, 앞으로 더욱 성숙한 예술가로서의 발전을 기약하는 중요한 디딤돌이 될 것으로 기대된다.
A solo exhibition by artist Hyejae Oh will be held at Gallery Hanok from January 9-18, 2019, on the occasion of her winning the 3rd Gallery Hanok Bulhwa-Folk Painting Competition.
A self-taught artist who pioneered her artistic path, Oh is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her artistic journey by reinterpreting the world of Buddhism and folk tales with works that combine tradition and novelty, making her a unique figure in the art world.
"The number 10 is a symbol of completeness, and in Buddhism, it symbolizes the ten directions, which means 'the whole world,'" says Oh.
Her work is in line with the Buddha's teachings that transcend time and space, providing viewers with opportunities for deep reflection.
She is the author of "I am a Self-Taught Artist" and "A Self-Taught Artist's Perspective: Reading Outsider Art," and through her books, art criticism and columns, she seeks to promote understanding and communication between different cultures through art.
Oh, who began illustrating in 2014, has been building his own artistic world without formal art education.
Through her participation in various artistic activities at home and abroad, she has gained recognition on the international stage, including a gold medal at the 'COVID-19 International Charity Painting Competition' hosted by the Asian Art Association (AAA) in Singapore in 2020 and the first selection for the '3rd COCA International Competition' hosted by the Italian Center for Contemporary Art (COCA) in 2021.
This exhibition showcases the fruits of Oh's artistic endeavors over the past decade, and is expected to be an important stepping stone in anticipation of his further development as a mature artist.
